In keeping with the age old tradition of the Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, there was always a system of career counselling in some name of other which ultimately gave rise to the present Placement Cell around January, 2005.
The Placement Cell started its activities from February, 2005. The first organised campus recruitment drive was made on 26th April, 2005 by ABC Consultants Pvt. Ltd. for our Post Graduate students only. Subsequently, on 2nd of May, 2005 the same company organised campus recruitment drive for the B.Com. students. The outcome of those recruitment drives was quite encouraging. Many of our students (10 from P.G. and 4 from U.G.) were selected. After that, GE Money organised campus recruitment drive on 4th May, 2005 where nine of our students were selected. Next to that India Bull Securities Ltd. came to organize the campus recruitment drive and finally selected and offered fourteen (14) of our students various posts in the month of May, 2006.
In between, there were queries from various Commercial Houses and Chartered Firms, seeking our students for vacancies they had with them. To name a few like Renault Technology, Ashok k. Nadhani, S.M. Mishra and Associates etc. Reliance Mutual Fund knocked at our door on 2.1.2006, but was denied entry because the job profile was not good enough for our students. Likewise, many other companies of less repute like Shree Automobiles (P) Ltd. (28.4.06) were denied entry. It has become the primary duty of the placement cell to check the credentials of the companies and examine the job profiles for the safety of our students. Our college is not the fishing pond of spurious employers and our students can not be allowed to be duped by such employers and it has become our duty to see that our students are not duped or cheated.
Reliance Group Support Service (P) Ltd. came on 14.10.2005 (But NCC ‘C’ certificate was required). Google, the world’s largest search engine, was keen on recruiting “Ad words Representatives” on 23rd August, 2005, but students took no interest. On 4.8.2005 Progeon, a subsidiary of Infosys came with their campus Ambassador Program, but it was all about BPO industry and was not entertained. Steel Worth Pvt. Ltd. wanted to recruit 4 Junior Accountant but was denied entry because of poor pay (Rs.3000 – Rs.5000). Likewise, queries from E-Com Solutions – Job provider in the field of BPO was also denied on 5.4.05. International BPO giants like IBM, WIPRO and GENPACT etc. are constantly knocking at our door, but we are not very interested. We are having a good relationship with Price Water House Coopers. On 19th February, 2007 they came and presented the CIMA-MT to our students. HSBC invited our cell to be present at their office for an Academicians Meet on 15.2.2007, followed by CMC Limited (A TATA enterprise), on 5.9.2006, the Indian Hotels Limited (Taj Group) on 23.1.2007, and HDFC organised campus recruitment in 2007 and Indian Foils Limited came on 5.3.2007, but nothing materialized.
On 12.2.2007 AXIS Bank recruited two of our students through the cell on 2007, McKinsey Knowledge Centre (India) Pvt. Ltd, world’s largest and most renowned consultancy company, organised the campus recruitment drive in the college (for the first time in their history in a U.G. College). HDFC Bank came for campus recruitment in 2007. Now, to run the placement cell successfully more effort is needed. Adequate financial budget with regular interaction with the industry through chamber of commerce is need of the hour. It is also needed that Industry and Corporate Houses must come to know that we offer best commercial brains for their purpose. The relationship between the college and the corporates must be built up to strengthen industry academician bond.
